Inversion exercises with answers

Quick answer. Inversion changes normal statement order to auxiliary + subject + main verb after certain negative or restrictive expressions: Never have I seen such a view. Inversion in English: the basic pattern

Normal statement: subject + auxiliary + main verb.

Inversion: trigger + auxiliary + subject + main verb.

If there is no auxiliary in the original Present Simple or Past Simple statement, use do/does/did. Keep the main verb in the base form: Rarely did she make, not did she made. Review auxiliary changes in mixed tenses exercises.

Hardly, scarcely and no sooner

Use these patterns when one past event happened immediately before another:

• Hardly/Scarcely had + subject + V3 when + Past Simple: Hardly had we sat down when the lights went out.
• No sooner had + subject + V3 than + Past Simple: No sooner had she arrived than the meeting began.

The earlier action takes the Past Perfect. If this tense is difficult, complete the Past Perfect exercises before Exercise 3.

Inversion after only

Inversion follows the main clause when an only expression begins the sentence: Only then did I understand. With a time or condition clause, do not invert inside that clause: Only after I had checked the figures did I notice the error.

Inverted conditionals

Formal conditionals can omit if and invert the subject with had, were, or should.

Exercise 1: rewrite with inversion

Begin with the word or phrase in brackets.

1. I had never heard such a convincing explanation. (Never)
2. She rarely visits the office on Fridays. (Rarely)
3. We understood the scale of the problem only then. (Only then)
4. You must not share this password under any circumstances. (Under no circumstances)
5. He not only missed the deadline, but he also lost the files. (Not only)
6. I realized my keys were missing only after I reached the station. (Only after)

Exercise 2: choose the correct form

1. Never I have seen / have I seen so many people here.
2. Little did they know / they knew that the plan had changed.
3. Only by practising daily you can improve / can you improve.
4. Seldom does he make / he does make the same mistake twice.

Exercise 3: hardly or no sooner

Combine the sentences using the phrase in brackets.

1. We sat down. The fire alarm rang. (Hardly…when)
2. She submitted the form. She received a confirmation email. (No sooner…than)

4. They closed the doors. Another guest arrived. (Hardly…when)

Exercise 4: inverted conditionals

Rewrite without if.

1. If I had known about the delay, I would have stayed at home.
2. If you should have any questions, contact the support team.

1. Rarely she goes to bed before midnight.

Inversion and indirect questions

Stylistic inversion is different from an embedded question. In Never have I seen…, the auxiliary moves before the subject for emphasis. In Could you tell me where she lives?, the embedded part uses statement order. Compare the patterns in indirect questions exercises.

What level is inversion in English?

Most emphatic and negative inversion is studied at B2–C1. Basic question inversion appears much earlier, but it is a different use of word order.

Do I always invert after a negative word?

No. The trigger normally appears at the beginning for emphasis. In an ordinary sentence such as I have never seen it, normal statement order remains.

Can inversion be used in conversation?

Yes, but many forms sound formal or emphatic. Fixed patterns such as Neither do I are common in speech; structures such as Under no circumstances… are more typical of formal language.
