Articles exercises with answers and rules

Direct answer. English articles show whether we mean one general thing, any example of a thing, or a specific thing already known to the speaker and listener. Use a before a consonant sound, an before a vowel sound, the for a specific object, and no article for many general plural or uncountable meanings.

These articles exercises focus on meaning, not mechanical guessing. Read the sentence, decide whether the noun is new or specific, then choose a, an, the or zero article.

Basic rule

A and an mean one non-specific thing. The means a specific thing. Zero article often means a general idea, a plural group or an uncountable noun.

Article Use Example Translation
a one new thing before a consonant sound I saw a dog. Я увидел собаку.
an one new thing before a vowel sound She has an idea. У нее есть идея.
the specific thing The dog is in the garden. Эта собака в саду.
zero article general plural or uncountable noun Children need sleep. Детям нужен сон.

A or an

The choice depends on sound, not spelling. Say an hour because hour starts with a vowel sound. Say a university because university starts with the sound /ju/.

Phrase Why Translation
an apple vowel sound яблоко
a book consonant sound книга
an honest answer h is silent честный ответ
a European city starts with /j/ sound европейский город

The or zero article

Use the when the listener knows which object you mean. Use zero article when you speak generally: I like music. (Я люблю музыку.) But use the for a specific thing: The music in this film is beautiful. (Музыка в этом фильме красивая.)

Practice notes for Russian speakers

Russian has no articles, so learners often skip them. In English, a singular countable noun usually needs a signal: a teacher, the teacher, my teacher, this teacher. The mistake I saw dog sounds incomplete because dog is singular and countable.

Do not put the before every abstract word. Say Love is important. (Любовь важна.) Say The love in this story is painful. (Любовь в этой истории болезненная.) The second sentence is specific.

Extra examples

  • I need a chair. (Мне нужен стул.)
  • The chair near the window is broken. (Стул у окна сломан.)
  • She is an architect. (Она архитектор.)
  • We had dinner at home. (Мы ужинали дома.)
  • The dinner was delicious. (Ужин был вкусным.)
  • People need clean air. (Людям нужен чистый воздух.)
