Causative have exercises with answers

Causative have: form and meaning

Service or arranged action: subject + have/get + object + past participle.

• We have the windows cleaned every month.
• She got her laptop repaired yesterday.
• They are going to have the kitchen painted.

The subject does not perform the action. In She had her hair cut, another person cut it. The focus is on arranging or receiving the service, not on the worker.

Have something done and the passive voice

Both structures use a past participle, but their focus differs. The car was repaired is an ordinary passive sentence about the car. I had the car repaired adds the person who arranged or experienced the action. Compare this distinction with the tasks on passive voice exercises.

FAQ

What is the difference between have and get something done?

Both can describe arranging a service. Get is often more informal and can emphasize achieving a result, while have is neutral. The word order remains the same: have/get + object + past participle.

Can causative have describe a bad event?

Yes. Sentences such as She had her bag stolen describe something unpleasant that happened to the subject. The subject did not arrange the theft; the grammar presents the event as an experience.

Is have something done passive?

It has a passive meaning because the object receives the action, but it is a causative construction, not an ordinary passive sentence. It also shows who arranged or experienced the action.
